Sunday I raced a 10K in 40:19. I finished 9th out of 116 at 6:30 minutes/mile. I went through 2 miles in 12:20, 4 in 25:00, and 6 in 39:00. Not very evenly paced. Last year I ran 39:26 at the same race.
I am very happy about how this race went. My training this year has not been good (only a few weeks greater than 30 miles/week). About three weeks ago I hurt my heel, so I barely ran the three weeks before the race. I'm not in great shape and ran better than I expected (I had expected to run between 42 and 44).
My dad was in town and ran the 10K too. He did well and won an age group award. |

It's a little embarassing to admit, but I spent 8 hours waiting in line for the iphone launch.
I've not used it for long, but it is an incredibally slick device. Apple knows style and user interfaces as well as anyone. It is very intuitive and easy to use.
The Internet on wifi is great; EDGE not so good. It takes at least half a minute to load any web page worth loading. About what I suspected, but is neat to always have the web at your fingertips.
The LCD is wonderful. The touchscreen keyboard is a non-issue; I wrote this post on the iPhone.
Its missing lots of features that would make it so much more useful. 3G, GPS, flash, java, document editing, Bluetooth modem, video camera, voice dialing, instant messaging and more. I hope some of these items are added with software updates.
That's about it. I love it, but nothing could live up to the hype. I should also point out that this is my first cellphone,so I don't exactly have a frame of reference here.
Any questions? |

| 2006 |
[Jan. 1st, 2007|05:20 pm] |
2006 was the only year since high school during which I was serious about my running. Before 2006 I had run, but only intermittently.
I logged over 1000 miles in the last six months of 2006. I ran at least 1400 miles for the year. I improved my post-high school 5K PR by 3:06. I improved my 10K PR by 6:07. I improved my trail 25K PR by 10:43. I ran my first marathon. I took home an 2nd place age-group (25-29) award in a race with 1778 participants. |

Good long run on Saturday. Ran Monday and Wednesday with my dad (he's training for the Houston Marathon). My feet are a little bruised, but mostly I feel good. |

Took 4 weeks off after the half marathon. The week before this I ran three times for 10 miles total, just testing my legs and seeing how I felt. I decided it was time to start training again, with the intent to try to pull it back together for the Austin Marathon 2/18.
I don't think I lost too much during my break - I was able to do basically the same workouts I did before my break in the same amount of time. I was probably working a little harder now though.
Next week I want to run 40+ miles, and after that sustain 50+ (and hopefully hit 60 or 70 once or twice) until the taper before the race. There's a few races before the marathon that I might run more as hard training runs than to race - a 20 miler 1/7 and a half marathon 1/28. |

| half marathon race |
[Nov. 12th, 2006|05:01 pm] |
I ran 1:22:48 for a 13.1 miles, or 6:19/mile. 23rd out of 1778. And I got an age group award! 2nd in the 25-29 age group.
What a tough race. Between mile 4 and 4.5, the course loses 250 feet. Then you climb the hills to win that elevation back. The downhill actually hurt more; during races I really run the downhills hard, but on this course I was moving so fast when it got so steep downhill that I couldn't physically slow down! I was braking as absolutely hard as I could and was still way out of control fast. Kind of scary, but on the other hand I blew by other runners here like they were standing still.
At mile 7 after the major hills I was feeling pretty crappy. This guy I recognized caught me and tried to pass - I decided I was going to hang on to his pace as long as I could. Running next to him reminded me how to run fast again, and I ended up dropping him.
I ran this course as hard and evenly paced as I could have. I basically ran 6:20's from the start - miles 8-11 were a little faster, 12 & 13 were slower. Despite mostly even pacing, I was still passing people the whole way, and barely edged someone out in the last quarter mile. I finished with a hard sprint. The splits I remember are 19:00 at 3 miles, 38:00 at 6 miles, 63:18 at 10 miles.
I think this is it for my running season. I have several half-injuries that need time to heal, and I've been training pretty hard for a long time. I plan to take 4-6 weeks off (maybe still jogging 15 miles/week), or longer if I need to. |

| training log, 11/04 - 11/10 |

Sat 11/04 AM 19.5 Sun 11/05 AM 5 Mon 11/06 AM 10 Tue 11/07 AM 7 Wed 11/08 AM 7.5 Thu 11/09 AM rest (out of town for work) Fri 11/10 AM 6.5 Tot 55.5
Great long run on Saturday, ran it as a long progression run, started at 8:20/mile, slowly picked it up, and finished feeling strong at 6:40/mile. I've picked up some very sore muscles or something in my lower abdomen, it hurts for the first few minutes of my runs and then goes away. Hopefully this gets better soon.
I also picked up some new shoes, Adidas Adizero LT2. 7.0 oz for the pair, they are sold as "very lightweight trainers". Adidas brought them into the states unmodified from a shoe they sell in Japan - Japanese runners are apparently into what we consider here to be minimal running shoes, and it's great that we can finally start to get some of these shoes in the states.
I have a big half-marathon Sunday morning. I'm shooting for 1:25, or about 6:30/mile. It's a tough course with hills, and I think I'll have lots of fun. |

Sat 10/28 AM 15.5 (25k trail race) Sun 10/29 rest (sore) Mon 10/30 AM 10 Tue 10/31 AM 10 Wed 11/01 AM 8 (4x1mile, 2 min rest, 5:45,5:36,5:31,5:22) Thu 11/02 AM 4.5 Fri 11/03 AM 7.5 Tot 55.5
Good week of training. I ran a mile repeat workout Wednesday, 4 miles total with 2 minutes of rest (jogging) between each mile. I was happy that I was able to keep pushing the pace of these miles faster, but disappointed that I didn't sack up and run the 5th mile repeat.
My next race is a half marathon on 11/12. This is a very big race for me, and how well I do will help me decide what to do with my running for the rest of the year. I am mentally and physically ready for a 4-6 week break (only light running, maybe 15-20 miles a week), but I might try to hold on and race a fast marathon off of the training I've done. |

| 25k race |
[Oct. 28th, 2006|09:32 pm] |
I ran a 25K trail race this morning. I ran a 1:47:33 (6:55/mile), and came in 8th out of 259.
I've run this race twice before, but was 11 minutes faster this year. The weather was perfect. Before the race, I wasn't sure how fast I was going to be able to run because I might not have been completely recovered from the marathon 6 days ago. So I took it pretty easy to the first aid station (4 miles), took stock of how my legs felt, and decided to go for it. I ran way faster than I thought I could; parts of the trails are pretty tough at least compared to roads, all twisty and full of roots to trip over. I'm pretty pumped that I could run under 7:00 miles there. |

| training log, 10/21 - 10/27 |
[Oct. 27th, 2006|01:18 pm] |
Sat 10/21 rest (for race) Sun 10/22 AM 26 (marathon) Mon 10/23 AM rest (very sore) Tue 10/24 PM 2 Wed 10/25 AM 7.5 Thu 10/26 AM 7.5 Fri 10/27 AM 4.5 Tot 47.5
Running the Chicago marathon with my sister was very challenging. We finished in just under 5:20, and none of my training really prepared me to be able to jog for so long. Turns out running 12:00 miles is very much different than running 8:00, and I'm an awkward and inefficient runner at 12 minute miles. We did have fun though, and I'm glad I ran it with her.
I didn't train well the rest of the week since I'm still recovering, although Wednesday's run was pretty fast. I'm running a 25K trail race Saturday morning, but I'm not sure if I'm recovered enough to really race it. We'll see. |
